¿Y si el próximo descubrimiento fuera un universo virtual?
Esta semana Facebook ha anunciado que en los próximos cinco años tiene previsto contratar a 10.000 personas en Europa para lanzar su “metaverso”, un concepto surgido de la ciencia-ficción y que ya apunta maneras para liderar la próxima revolución tecnológica.
¿Pero qué es el metaverso?
El término metaverso fue acuñado por primera vez ya en los años 90 en la novela Snow Crash en la que se definía como un mundo de ficción en el que los humanos podrían vivir una vida virtual paralela y que años más tarde se volvería a utilizar en películas tan conocidas como Matrix o Ready Player One.
El metaverso pues vendría a ser un mundo online en el que las personas viven y se relacionan en entornos virtuales compartidos a través de un avatar, gracias a la realidad aumentada y virtual. Y mi pregunta es: ¿podría suponer esto dejar de lado en parte el mundo físico?
¿Cómo pretende Facebook hacerlo realidad?
En una reciente entrevista, Mark Zuckerberg explicaba su visión acerca del metaverso: “Puedes pensar en el metaverso como un internet incorporado donde, en lugar de ver el contenido, estarás en él”. Zuckerberg presentaba Horizon Workrooms como una de sus principales apuestas para hacerlo realidad, un espacio en el que, utilizando un visor de realidad virtual, diferentes personas pueden reunirse para trabajar de forma telemática y llevar a cabo tareas que incluso parecen más propias del mundo físico.
¿Un mundo físico o virtual?
Personalmente, creo que ni una cosa ni la otra. Lo que parece indudable es que contribuiría a un ya de por sí avance imparable hacia la digitalización. Ahora bien, también es cierto que podría interpretarse como un universo virtual que amplía nuestro mundo físico y en el que las personas se comunicarían las unas con las otras utilizando un avatar. Por tanto, podríamos hablar de un mundo más virtual que cada vez se parece más al físico.
Llegados a este punto, ¿te viene a la cabeza algún videojuego? Sí, se parece bastante a un videojuego, aunque sus aplicaciones van más allá del entretenimiento, como podrían ser participar en una reunión de trabajo, ir de compras, asistir a un concierto, entrenar en casa o visitar un museo. Las posibilidades de este nuevo mundo paralelo y digital son tan amplias como la vida real y, por tanto, también las oportunidades de negocio que las empresas han visto en él.
Una apuesta no sólo de Facebook
Pero el metaverso no es solo una puesta estratégica de Facebook. Otras grandes empresas –especialmente de la industria del entretenimiento que es la más pionera- ya han empezado a jugar sus cartas para posicionarse en esta nueva realidad de universos interconectados: Epic Games (Fortnite), plataformas creativas como Roblox o videojuegos como Animal Crossing.
De hecho, son dos las claves del metaverso. Una es la interoperabilidad, entendida como la capacidad de que experiencias de diferentes compañías estén interconectadas y permitan que los usuarios salten de una a otra sin tener que cambiar de avatar (por ejemplo, entre diferentes atracciones de un gran parque temático). La otra es la accesibilidad, según la cual nunca se dejaría de estar activo y sería navegable desde cualquier dispositivo y sistema operativo.
¿Qué oportunidades pueden aflorar?
Bloomberg estima que este nuevo mercado ofrece una oportunidad de alrededor de 800.000 millones de dólares. Como ya ocurrió con internet, lo que apunta a ser un nuevo paradigma para la comunicación humana, también puede ser una enorme “mina de oro” en la que lo intangible adquiera un enorme valor. Detrás de todo en el caso de Facebook obviamente está la publicidad, su principal vía de ingresos hoy en día.
Pero donde realmente las empresas han visto la gran oportunidad es en el sistema de pagos que permita poseer bienes digitales, lo que se prevé haga aflorar una nueva economía virtual y en algo igual o más monetizable: el valor de los datos (en cantidad y calidad, desde el punto de vista de la accesibilidad que antes comentaba).
Ahora bien, como todo en la vida no está exento de riesgos, los retos van más allá de lo tecnológico. Me refiero a aspectos tales como la legalidad desde el punto de vista de la propiedad de los bienes digitales, la regulación en un mercado en el que los gigantes tecnológicos dominarían, la protección de datos o, incluso, la dimensión ético-moral en un mundo cada vez más hiperconectado… y la paradoja es que puede haber quien piense que, a la vez, también más “desconectado” de la realidad.
¿Acabará teniendo éxito el metaverso?
Hay quien ve cierto oportunismo en Facebook ante la reciente caída del servicio o las acusaciones de primar el negocio por encima de la salud mental. Y puede que no exactamente como Mark Zuckerberg, pero creo que sí es bastante plausible un avance hacia un mundo digital donde se mezclen las realidades física, virtual y aumentada.
De ser así –y aunque ahora suene un poco a utopía- no sería la primera vez que la realidad supere la ficción. Y llegado el momento, no hay duda de que los profesionales de marketing deberíamos formarnos y reinventarnos para dar respuesta a este nuevo paradigma de comportamiento humano con nuevas formas de vivir, trabajar y sobre todo de relacionarnos.
En algunas películas de ciencia ficción se hablaba de descubrir otros planetas o incluso universos, pero ¿y si el universo del futuro estuviera en el actual pero de forma virtual? ¿Metaverso? Tiempo al tiempo…

Metaverso, muy interesante que suena, sin embargo pienso que hay que tomar este tema con mucho cuidado, es imposible huir de esta “realidad” tecnológica que tampoco es muy nueva, pero como lo muestra la gente de Facebook es algo mucho mas allá, es virtualizar esta vez nuestro verdadero mundo y es allí donde hay que tener cuidado por la información que damos, por los posibles delincuentes cibernéticos que puedan tomar ventaja de esta tecnología para robar, matar, secuestrar, entre otras cosas. Hay que esperar e ir viendo como se desarrolla todo esta tecnología tan interesante peor que hasta el día de hoy para mi es de doble filo.
